[quote] 10. 18:15:46 <@etqw> Welcome to this developer chat for the Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars demo. Once the chat kicks off, you’ll be able to ask a question by typing the following: /msg etqw 10. 18:16:06 <@etqw> Let’s start things off with introducing the dev team members we’ve got here today. 10. 18:16:21 <@adman> I’m Steve Hessel, Splash Damage’s community relations manager. 10. 18:16:45 <@jRAD|Work> I’m Jared Hefty, a programmer at Splash Damage. 10. 18:16:49 <@RR2|work> And me, I’m Arnout van Meer, technical director over at SD. 10. 18:16:50 <@digibob> I’m Gordon Biggans, a gameplay programmer at Splash Damage. 10. 18:16:59 <@bongoboy> I’m Edward Stern, a designerperson at SD 10. 18:17:01 <@Wils> I’m Matt Wilson, one of Splash Damage’s two lead level designers 10. 18:17:04 <@malarky> i’m steve gaffney, i work for splash damage too 10. 18:17:24 <@etqw> veertje asked: is 1680x1050 supported? 10. 18:17:24 <@etqw> malarky answers: yes 10. 18:17:35 <@malarky> :) 10. 18:17:45 <@Maleficus> I’m John Dean, AI programmer at id Software 10. 18:17:59 <@Locki-SD> I’m Paul Wedgwood, Splash Damage’s Owner and Lead Game Designer 10. 18:18:17 <@Fluffy_gIMp> I’m Richard Jolly, Splash Damage’s Art Director 10. 18:18:45 <@SyncError> I’m Adam Pyle, Community Liaison and Technical Specialist at id Software 10. 18:18:54 <@[SD]Relaxer> I’m Neil Postlethwaite, the Managing Director at Splash Damage and the Producer on ETQW 10. 18:19:26 <@adman> If you want to ask a specific person a question, feel free to. :) 10. 18:20:03 <@adman> Alright, here we go… 10. 18:20:09 <@etqw> gert asked: why is directx required when the game is made for opengl ? What is your response to john carmack saying the 30fps(animation) 60fps(gameplay) is a bad hack ? 10. 18:20:09 <@etqw> RR2|work answers: DirectX is used for sound input and output. Regarding the unlock FPS code, architecturally it isn’t the most pretty lady in the house, but it does result in a better experience than having the framerate fixed at 30Hz 10. 18:20:43 <@etqw> GROOBLLE asked: this question is to [SD]Relaxer, why do you have such a strange surname? 10. 18:20:43 <@etqw> [SD]Relaxer answers: Blame the parents :) I’m from Northern England, we do surnames of quality up there 10. 18:20:46 <@etqw> sukeri asked: Will it need DX10 to run? 10. 18:20:47 <@etqw> RR2|work answers: Nope, DX9c is required, the latest version to utilise all XInput functionality 10. 18:20:52 <@etqw> GreasedScotsman asked: 1) Are files in the demo encrypted? That is, will I be able to look at a .mtr file from the demo in a text editor? 2) If not released in the box with the retail game, do you have an estimated timeframe for the editor’s release? And if possible, a ballpark for the SDK? 10. 18:20:52 <@etqw> jRAD|Work answers: The demo files will be encrypted 10. 18:21:08 <@etqw> [RN]Tyberius-^ asked: Question to Jared Hefty (jRAD) In which programming-languages are QW coded in? 10. 18:21:08 <@etqw> jRAD|Work answers: The game is written in C++ 10. 18:21:15 <@etqw> s5|t1tus asked: How many hours need to complete the game? 10. 18:21:15 <@etqw> [SD]Relaxer answers: There is no game over 10. 18:21:43 <@etqw> Zippa asked: Will there be a Anti-Cheat software or anything related to that? 10. 18:21:43 <@etqw> Wils answers: yes, the game ships with punkbuster support 10. 18:21:52 <@etqw> join asked: How big will the demo download be and how will it be able to run on a 8600M GT 10. 18:21:52 <@etqw> RR2|work answers: Around 700MB, and a 8600M GT should be fine, providing you have up to date drivers. 10. 18:21:58 <@jRAD|Work> oops, typo correction they will NOT encrypted :) 10. 18:22:06 <+meeb> —————- handy line break —————– 10. 18:22:18 <@etqw> sp^wus asked: will the replay and possible framedump features be fully accessible in the demo? 10. 18:22:18 <@etqw> digibob answers: yes! 10. 18:22:27 <@etqw> Razer0 asked: Compared to other battlefield-style games, ie Battlefield 2, why was it decided to only have max players on a server capped at 24? 10. 18:22:27 <@etqw> malarky answers: the limit is 32, not 24. Because the gameplay is focused around objectives rather than spread across the whole map, you really don’t need more than 24 to have a good game 10. 18:22:33 <@etqw> [SS]VeNoM asked: how does a person get a step in the right direction to becoming a developer 10. 18:22:33 <@etqw> [SD]Relaxer answers: I would start in the mod community - a lot of the guys at Splash Damage cut their development teeth working on solid mods 10. 18:22:46 <@etqw> Ressless asked: How many maps we can play in the full-version of ET:QW? 10. 18:22:46 <@etqw> Fluffy_gIMp answers: There will be 12 unique maps released with the full game spanning 4 campaigns 10. 18:23:00 <@etqw> Crowlee asked: What are the expected system requirements to run QW? It’s a decent mix. 10. 18:23:24 <+meeb> Please remember that you can ask questions by /msg etqw [your question] 10. 18:23:26 <+meeb> —————- handy line break —————– 10. 18:23:29 <@etqw> Own|Madscripter asked: what do you mean no game over? ETQW is an FPS game. no? 10. 18:23:29 <@etqw> [SD]Relaxer answers: It’s an online FPS, so there’s no real finish line - every game is different 10. 18:23:43 <@etqw> Termite asked: Is there a smaller dl from Beta 2 -> demo or do we need to DL it all again? 10. 18:23:43 <@etqw> Wils answers: you’ll need to download the demo seperately to the beta 10. 18:23:55 <@etqw> Dracohouston asked: jrad, does this mean that the demo can load non pure files as well? 10. 18:23:55 <@etqw> jRAD|Work answers: You won’t be able to load new content 10. 18:24:22 <@etqw> Loffy asked: Could you tell us a bit about nick and registering nicks in the demo, please? 10. 18:24:23 <@etqw> SyncError answers: For the demo only, nickname registration is not required. 10. 18:24:39 <@etqw> burneddi asked: will there be a map editor? 10. 18:24:39 <@etqw> jRAD|Work answers: a Map editor (and SDK) will be released shortly after the game is out. 10. 18:24:44 <@etqw> pixel asked: are graphic cards required that support shader3 (like bioshock) or will older ones with sharder2 tech work too? 10. 18:24:45 <@etqw> RR2|work answers: Nope, we have some shaders that take advantage of the branching functionality in SM3, but it is not a requirement 10. 18:25:13 <@etqw> cctoide asked: What sort of map types can we expect? Will they all be snowy? 10. 18:25:13 <@etqw> Wils answers: there are a variety of different themes, including temperate (like Valley, the demo map), arid and arctic 10. 18:25:24 <+meeb> ---------------- handy line break ----------------- 10. 18:25:47 <@etqw> j52|Jaede asked: How many maps contain the MCP objective? 10. 18:25:47 <@etqw> Wils answers: about a third of the maps include an MCP as one of the objectives 10. 18:25:50 <@etqw> CNU asked: I'm 16 years old now and playing with OpenGL etc. Would Computer Science be a nice thing if I want to code games? 10. 18:25:50 <@etqw> digibob answers: yes, comp. sci is a good degree to go for, for games, maths is also a good idea 10. 18:26:06 <@etqw> Horny84 asked: Is it possible to play on beta server after demo release? 10. 18:26:06 <@etqw> malarky answers: the beta is continuing a little while after the demo launch for testing reasons 10. 18:26:19 <@etqw> Alera asked: Due to the nature of the 30FPS Animation cap, in future will it be possible for animations to be interpolated during a netdemo to allow Movie makers the ability to record at high FPS with out getting stuttery animations? 10. 18:26:19 <@etqw> RR2|work answers: This should be possible for someone with access to the gamecode to achieve. 10. 18:26:29 <@etqw> Razer0 asked: Does ET:QW support DX10? If not, will it in future with a patch of sorts? 10. 18:26:29 <@etqw> Wils answers: ETQW uses OpenGL, rather than DirectX 10. 18:26:57 <@etqw> burneddi asked: can you host a server with the demo edition 10. 18:26:57 <@etqw> malarky answers: yes 10. 18:26:59 <+meeb> Please remember that you can ask questions by /msg etqw [your question] 10. 18:27:00 <@etqw> dedai asked: Will this game own? 10. 18:27:00 <@etqw> [SD]Relaxer answers: We'd like to think so 10. 18:27:03 <+meeb> ---------------- handy line break ----------------- 10. 18:27:20 <@etqw> MiiQ asked: Will there be an "official" torrent to the demo from Activision/id/SD? 10. 18:27:20 <@etqw> jRAD|Work answers: Yes, there will be 10. 18:27:22 <@etqw> ChibiZero asked: bongoboy, What's it take to be a 'designer person' for such a high profile game? 10. 18:27:22 <@etqw> bongoboy answers: A very good question that I ask myself from time to time. My route was almost entirely luck-based. Anyone attempting similar should probably bias their approach towards hard work and amassing skills. 10. 18:27:27 <@etqw> xt198 asked: Will we have a map editor to ETQW to make own maps? 10. 18:27:27 <@etqw> Fluffy_gIMp answers: We plan to release a map editor so that you can make your own maps, in the not too distant future 10. 18:27:34 <@etqw> NonamerKaktus asked: Are you guys drunk or something? 10. 18:27:35 <@etqw> [SD]Relaxer answers: I wish 10. 18:28:06 <@etqw> zipper asked: Seeing that most developers has moved to DirectX from openGL (I think Carmack even did?) why was openGL chosen? Was linux compatibility ever a concern? 10. 18:28:07 <@etqw> RR2|work answers: id Tech has historically always been based on OpenGL, we continue this tradition. It does indeed make ports to Mac and Linux easier 10. 18:28:16 <@etqw> Nige111 asked: Who’s the youngest person on the SD team? 10. 18:28:16 <@etqw> digibob answers: I think that’d be Arne Olav ‘ao’ Hallingstad 10. 18:29:09 <@etqw> xceed asked: are there any indoor fighting maps? 10. 18:29:10 <@etqw> Wils answers: there are indoor fighting objectives on most of the maps, but no map is set entirely indoors 10. 18:29:29 <@etqw> LilDildo asked: i've not seen or read up enough about ET:QW but will there be bots available for offline play? If so what will the aI of these bots be like? 10. 18:29:29 <@etqw> Maleficus answers: yes! There will be bots. Parallax mapping? 10. 18:30:01 <@etqw> RR2|work answers: There are several lighting methods in use, there is some precalulated lighting, but most of it is real time DOT3 bumpmapping with an ambient pass. There are a few surfaces that feature parallax mapping too. 10. 18:30:33 <@etqw> RealRook-SN asked: how many players can play at 1 server? 10. 18:30:33 <@etqw> [SD]Relaxer answers: The game is balanced for 24 players, an instance can take 32. We find 24 to be the sweet spot though 10. 18:30:47 <@etqw> Penn asked: Are dial up connections (56k) supported at all? 10. 18:30:47 <@etqw> bongoboy answers: Sadly no. We could probably do so only by making ETQW turn-based. And play-by-mail. 10. 18:30:53 <+meeb> Please be aware that you're asking around 8 questions a second at times so your question may not get answered straight away! 10. 18:31:09 <@etqw> Spitfire| asked: Release Date? 10. 18:31:09 <@etqw> [SD]Relaxer answers: ETQW is released on Oct 2 in North America, Sept 28 in Europe and Australia 10. 18:31:16 <@etqw> Petrified asked: How many hours were you at work a week? 10. 18:31:16 <@etqw> Locki-SD answers: I can't speak for the other teams, but the SD guys have been working 12-16 hour days, six or seven days a week, on and off, for months and months. 10. 18:31:25 <@etqw> Wolfgram asked: How many hours you used to develope this game ? 10. 18:31:25 <@etqw> bongoboy answers: All of them. 10. 18:31:45 <@etqw> kuxv asked: is there any estimate for linux client release ? 10. 18:31:45 <@etqw> RR2|work answers: TTimo is busy working on this, there is no ETA yet though. 10. 18:31:52 <@etqw> DRz_POKEMANS asked: Will you do something about the "wallhack" some of the ATi drivers give? Ranked servers are ran by Game Service Providers. They are providing hundreds of free ones for people to play on. 10. 18:37:16 <@etqw> rTg|j4b asked: hi SyncError and TTimo 10. 18:37:16 <@etqw> SyncError answers: Hey Hey. 10. 18:37:16 <@etqw> Pewr asked: Rumors has it that the textures used will be 5000x5000, how will that affect performance and visuals looks? 10. 18:37:16 <@etqw> Fluffy_gIMp answers: Each megatexure actually uses image sizes of 32,000 x 32,000 pixels, but this doesn’t all get loaded at once, the game loads sections in as required. The detail settings are scaleable such that it wont hurt performance. 10. 18:37:20 <@etqw> Tom__ asked: Why did you use DirectX instead of OpenAL for sound? 10. 18:37:21 <@etqw> RR2|work answers: Partially legacy reasons (the software solution was stable and good enough). There is an OpenAL backend too, but it is disabled by default and still has a few bugs. Right now it doesn’t offer any additional features, so there was no need to use it. 10. 18:37:24 <+meeb> —————- handy line break —————– 10. 18:37:25 <@etqw> Alera asked: TTimo, do you have a projected release date for a Linux Client? 10. 18:37:25 <@etqw> TTimo answers: no projected date, but it’s looking good 10. 18:37:52 <@etqw> slinter^td2 asked: do you guys like the band tool? :) 10. 18:37:53 <@etqw> jRAD|Work answers: I sure do :) 10. 18:38:00 <@etqw> MysticBiscuit asked: Is this game suitable for dutch people? 10. 18:38:00 <@etqw> RR2|work answers: Salteh and me say yes! (Except for the amount of hours you will lose playing it) 10. 18:39:13 <+meeb> [random update] there’s 2141 users in here! 10. 18:39:21 <@etqw> see https://community.enemyterritory.com/index.php?q=node/126 for more info on ET:QW’s music 10. 18:40:02 <@etqw> foxX asked: who performs the title song? 10. 18:40:02 <@etqw> SyncError answers: The music is the wonderful work of Bill Brown 10. 18:40:09 <@etqw> GROF|2Easy asked: Do you love me? 10. 18:40:09 <@etqw> malarky answers: like a brother 10. 18:40:09 <@etqw> Cortez1 asked: How many maps does etgw have? 10. 18:40:09 <@etqw> [SD]Relaxer answers: ETQW has 12 maps 10. 18:40:31 <@etqw> Ice_Weasel asked: Does the team have a favourite cheese? 10. 18:40:31 <@etqw> Fluffy_gIMp answers: I can only speak for myself; it has to be Double Gloucester :) 10. 18:40:32 <@etqw> mao asked: whats the official web of ET:QW ? 10. 18:40:32 <@etqw> adman answers: the official website for ETQW is www.enemyterritory.com - don’t forget to check out the official community site at https://community.enemyterritory.com and the stats site at https://stats.enemyterritory.com 10. 18:41:02 <@etqw> carnal asked: the mortar for the soldier class in the old ET was über, what made you leave it out is this game 10. 18:41:03 <@etqw> bongoboy answers: Several reason, but not least because the Artillery deployables were cooler. The GDF Soldier’s Rocket Launcher was actually originally concepted with a secondary function as an infantry mortar in mind - you’d swing it down, put one end on the ground, hold it by a handle and drop mortar bombs down it. But it just wasn’t as fun as deploying Artillery and designating targets. 10. 18:41:07 <@etqw> Guwashi asked: is there a plan to release localized version? Just because its a name like "Nike"? =( 10. 18:48:33 <@etqw> kevinc answers: We chose Quake Wars primarily because we liked the universe. The game play is an evolution of what we developed for Wolf: ET rather than Quake. Actually, we had some discussions early on about calling it Quake: Enemy Territory, but decided against it because we felt like this is really an Enemy Territory game. 10. 18:49:04 <@etqw> Deviant asked: How is the AI? Or am I reduced to following where the AI thinks it should be and I run around them? 10. 18:49:04 <@etqw> Maleficus answers: the bots work together with you and each other to complete the objecitves on the map. The bots will tend to your needs, cover you while you do the objective, and will follow the context sensitive orders you give them. 10. 18:49:40 <@etqw> phray asked: Will we need to create new users for the demo, or can we use existing accounts from the beta? 10. 18:49:41 <@etqw> [SD]Relaxer answers: The demo doesn't require users accounts 10. 18:50:44 <@etqw> Nager asked: is there a way to change nick in the fullgame? 10. 18:50:44 <@etqw> malarky answers: yes he does 10. 18:50:49 <@etqw> Wayne[ asked: Would a SDK make us able to create Mods? 10. 18:50:49 <@etqw> RR2|work answers: yes 10. 18:50:54 <@etqw> J3ns asked: Meeb ownz... right? xD 10. 18:50:54 <@etqw> meeb answers: hell yeah! A lot of the decisions about how the game is sold are publisher decisions. However, we certainly would love to see it on Steam. 10. 18:51:41 <@etqw> sturdy asked: what is 1800 UK Time in CET ? 10. 18:51:41 <@etqw> Wils answers: 1900 CET 10. 18:51:50 <@etqw> clf101 asked: will there be a lite version of the server files for the demo? 10. 18:51:50 <@etqw> malarky answers: yep, windows and linux 10. 18:52:00 <@etqw> Nige111 asked: Will the demo run on my Commodore 64? Certainly there are lots of hints towards Quake II. In the Quake universe timeline, ETQW is actually set before Quake II and III, so they're sort of ETQW's sequels, despite having been made first. Confused? You won't be. 10. 18:56:36 <@etqw> _Sleepy asked: Will maps be rebalanced post-release if statistics show imbalances? If so.. how often do you expect to do rebalancing? (Still havent been answered.. ) 10. 18:56:37 <@etqw> Locki-SD answers: We're confident that the game will be well-balanced on release, however as players discover new tactics that might be considered unsportsmanlike (and of course where tournaments need to make changes to keep competitive play going really well for 6v6) we'll do our best to stay on top of things. 10. 18:56:52 <@etqw> IMF2000 asked: which map comes with the demo? 10. 18:56:53 <@etqw> Wils answers: Valley is the map included with the demo 10. 18:56:53 <@jRAD|Work> ---------------- handy line break ----------------- 10. 18:56:53 <@etqw> Assassin asked: do any of you guys play Quake 3 or 4? if so, where do you idle on IRC for a game! ;) 10. 18:56:53 <@etqw> SyncError answers: I regularly play Quake 4, Quake 3 and ETQW. Why did you make it a vehicle + spam + deplyoable game? 10. 19:16:34 <@etqw> kevinc answers: A good portion of each map happens in doors or in areas that have limited vehicle access. Also, rocket launchers, EMP, Anti Vehicle turrets, and missile launchers are very effective against vehicles. Certainly, some maps rely more on vehicles than others. But I think you’ll find that overall the game balances them well. 10. 19:16:35 <@etqw> [CF]Gareth asked: How will the full game’s accounts work, will they be tied to keycodes as in BF2142 or can you create multiple accounts without keycodes as in BF2? 10. 19:16:35 <@etqw> Wils answers: you’ll be able to create up to three player accounts from each game key 10. 19:17:16 <@etqw> yoob asked: What about mods? We’ve been conservative about what we refer to as minimum system. So even if your computer is listed as a minimum system it should play fine. However, the best way to know is to download the demo and play it. The Valley map should give you a good indication of what your game play will be across the other maps. 10. 19:20:32 <@etqw> o-Q|connect asked: If you’re not going to answer this question, you are tottaly GAY 10. 19:20:33 <@etqw> Wils answers: no u 10. 19:20:38 <@etqw> liv3d asked: https://digg.com/pc_games/Enemy_Territory_Quake_Wars_Demo_Released <- \o/ 10. 19:20:39 <@etqw> TTimo answers: DIGG IT ! 10. 19:21:31 <@etqw> gamer4you asked: What cars do coders like you drive? 10. 19:21:31 <@etqw> Maleficus answers: Honda Civic. 10. 19:21:38 <@etqw> Your_server_die asked: Is it possible to delete one of the three accounts and create a new one with another name? 10. 19:21:38 <@etqw> Wils answers: yes 10. 19:21:39 <@etqw> dmitrij asked: mac support? 10. 19:21:39 <@etqw> Locki-SD answers: Aspyr are handling the Mac version of the game, as we speak, I hear it’s going really well. 10. 19:22:10 <@etqw> Rens asked: is there going to be a linux dedicated server for this demo ?
